This 2013 Mexican short (coming in at just under 10-minutes) was directed by Mariela Martinez and is a simple story with a good amount of atmosphere.
Frederico (Emilio Ridderstrom) – IMDb suggests the character is called Enilio – is a young boy playing, as we first see him, with a ball as his father (Fernando Silva) sands some woods. The boy’s vision locks onto a window, covered with cardboard to keep out the sun, but his father distracts him by asking him to pass some nails. The boy enters the building after passing them and looks up the stairs.
Emilio Ridderstrom as Frederico |
The boy is drawn to a room his father keeps padlocked shut and as the film progresses we see clues as to why – the father bringing home live chicken, a bandage on his hand with blood seeping, a rosary on the doorhandle supplementing the padlock… when the youngster asks about his mother (Daniela Gómez) and his father says he keeps him from her as he doesn’t want the boy to get sick like she is, well we know the score…
What would happen if Frederico were to get into the locked room? The answer is embedded below…
