Zahir Blue said...: Actually, the implied premise is that a weakened vampire could be restrained and killed by a large group of humans--presumably by setting fire to the creature. These days, that danger would be vastly increased due to things like napalm.

The implication is that very few vampires *can* be made because most cannot bring themselves to stop drinking once they taste human blood. And as predators they don't want too many others of their own kind. Also, humans have been in relatively short supply for much of history. It would behoove vampires not to be too gluttonous.

Mind you, this is IMHO a little bit like hand-waving. There are several inconsistencies in the TWILIGHT-verse, some of them quite off-color (like if the smell of blood makes vampires lose control, what about when women have their periods?).; 29/7/10 10:43 AM
