Short Film: Heartbreak and Lullabies

Directed by Chuck Harding and released in 2024, Heartbreak and Lullabies' running time of 47-minutes comes in just under feature length and probably had scope to go there if the filmmakers wanted.

Having started with a cityscape, we see a “Bio-Stain” company van, driven by Sid Kramer (Seth Gandrud), pull up at a crime scene. The voiceover is notable for giving a noir feel. He’s a crime scene cleaner and, when done, deposits the biological waste with creepy Jeb (Jakub Gniewszew). However, Sid has a side hustle…

Xavier Christian as Vincent

As he is driving, a man appears in the passenger seat, he is Vincent (Xavier Christian), the authority in a local vampire chapter. Vincent has employed Sid to clandestinely clean up messy feeds and has a problem, at the moment, with Elizabeth (Tondra Dené) a local vampire who has disdain for the rules and does leave messes behind. Unfortunately she takes an interest in Sid, marking him by biting his lip even…

Tondra Dené as Elizabeth

The film is solidly acted and well shot, the story pretty simple but it could have been expanded and had room to play around with character building – this is certainly true of the vampires who uniformly dress in a Goth fashion and en masse hiss when backing Elizabeth in an argument with Vincent. More character and less stereotype would have worked well, though we do get a feel for Elizabeth and Vincent. Vincent runs the relationship with Sid in a way that is likened to the Mafia.
