An anime based on a manga, Blood Blockade Battlefront takes place in a world where “the Great Collapse” caused the barriers between our world and a nether-dimension (the Alterworld) to collapse. This occurred in New York and the progress was halted by human casters – people with mystic abilities – creating a protective barrier. Within that barrier the human world and Alterworld have merged and humans and a variety of extra-dimensional beings live side by side. The city is now called HellSalem’s Lot.

Of course, the name itself is enough to make a vampire genre fan sit up and pay attention. But, continuing with the backstory, the series follows Leonardo Watch (Daisuke Sakaguchi), an ordinary young lad who was close to the barrier with his sister (Nana Mizuki) when he encountered a demon who stated that he would take the sight of one and give the other the All Seeing Eyes of God – his sister beat him to accepting blindness. Leo ended up in HellSalem’s Lot.

In the first episode he is mistaken for someone else and taken to an interview for Libra, a secret organisation maintaining the balance between the Alterworld and human world. Later, on a subway, he sees a being with an aura like crimson wings. Getting to Libra he mentions it, to everyone’s shock. He has seen a vampire, or as they know them a Blood Breed – normally invisible to human eyes, she has been revealed by the All Seeing Eyes of God.

Libra boss Klaus (Rikiya Koyama) calls in expert vampire hunter Blitz T. Abrams (Akio Otsuka), also known as Lucky Abrams. The story goes that he has been cursed so many times by Elder Blood Breeds that disasters always happens around him, but never hit him, rather others take the brunt of his curse. He suggests there are 13 elders and wants Leo to use the eyes to get their true names so they can be captured. They travel to the void, as that is where they apparently live… Leo sees many more than 13.

The vampire he saw is Valsh Rozzo Valctovoel Girika (Noto Mamiko), she has heard that Libra have special persons who could be a threat to her people and she goes into carnage to draw them out. She didn’t count on Leo finding her name and this allows Klaus to trap her as a crucifix. There are other episodes featuring Blood Breeds, making them somewhat a backbone of the series. They are able to take major damage and still recover and they can split apart and the parts will act autonomously. Girika shows the ability to suck blood through the air from a distance. The anime itself looked good and was fun, with a strong action aspect. 7 out of 10.
