Creating Vampires Creatively

Mick Farren

I have not had the dubious pleasure of the series Moonlight yet, it’s not come over to the UK – however everything I read fills me with dread.

I came across this piece by Mick Farren and he makes a really good point – that any novelist or film maker tackling vampires should remember – “The trick with creating vampires is that you really need to enjoy what you’re doing.” Bear in mind Mick should know, he wrote an excellent set of vampire novels, the Renquist Quadrilogy.

"Moonlight" is not bad. It is basically "Forever Knight" with a bigger budget. It was not the paranormal romance novel on TV that I was dreading.

thanks for the comment, everything I've read so far points towards Forever Knight and Angel.

I will, of couurse, be giving it a go - when the opportunity arises. Perhaps, as sometimes happens, going into it with low expectations will help.

Definitely more "Forever Knight" than "Angel." Despite the vampire element, it is more grounded in reality than "Angel." I think people who compare it to that series are just being lazy.

Farren's comments are, of course, 100% correct. I am tired of people writing vampire novels because they sell. I can tell something written out of desire for cash and out of love for the material.

The younger viewer, of course, may not be aware of forever knight - but you're right many are just being lazy - and that's having only seen the symopsis.

I am intigued by Farren's comment, in the piece, that he spotted a detail he had invented - I wonder if I'll spot it when I get chance to watch it?
