Over the years we have had various relations of Dracula (Ryan Mulkay), be it his daughter, son, widow and even his dog. In 2007 director Paul Awad decided to introduce us to his mother (Mary Lechter) in this 15-minute short.
Starting with a view of a castle, we then see him descending a staircase, dressed in the classic-Lugosi style, cloak and all. He exclaims that *she* is here, addressing his mother as he does so. She is Lucy (Mildred Marie Langford) and the first barb from the mother is her deliberately not remembering her name. Soon there is a knock and Dracula opens the door by telekinesis.
Dracula and Lucy |
Lucy enters and Dracula helps her with her cloak but then decides she should leave it on, making the excuse of the castle being draughty but obviously concerned about the décolletage gown she wears. She leaves the cloak as she heads to the dinner table. It is clear to us that this will be an uncomfortable meal as the emasculated Dracula struggles between the personalities of these two powerful women… but who will come out on top and will Dracula stand up for himself?
mother |
That, of course, is the question. This could have been a situation drawn between a son, his mother and his lover as the mother refuses to release the cord but, of course, tying it into the famous vampire makes it that bit more amusing. The opening credits hark back to the style used by Universal in the thirties (scary to think that in 7 years we will be in the thirties again) and the film was shot in the black and white of that era.
