A portmanteau film, this one was clearly a low budget, indie affair but it was one where the segments were clearly shot for the film (rather than stitching shorts together) and actors reappeared in segments.
It has a couple driving into the country for a bonfire and bickering and telling scary stories as they drive (and walk, following a gas faux pas). The portmanteau has a twist, partly broadcast ahead and partly silly given the misdirecting dialogue. The segment we are concerned with is the last one.
Jason John Beebe as Nate |
It is, the storyteller (Julio Bana Fernandez) suggests, the events around a bachelor party for Nate (Jason John Beebe). However his three friends are more concerned with trying to get him to break things off, believing his fiancée (Luba Hansen, Sleepless Nights) to be bad for him. Whilst we do get a heart-to-heart moment (that doesn’t go to well), there mostly isn’t much story to this. There is a run at an incest gag that recurs through the segment, but wasn’t too funny.
the vamps |
Essentially the guys pick up three girls to visit the cabin they’ve rented (according to IMDb trivia it was meant to be four but one was unfortunately not feeling well on the day of shooting). They will do anything for the right money, or weed, but actually they prove to be vampires and only interested in the guys’ blood. The segment has a twist that I won’t spoil, but which doesn’t explain itself particularly either.
vamp face |
There is little lore – simply fangs, vamp face (on some) and attacks. The effects are ok for a low budget, the acting is patchy but the film itself is short and so doesn’t outstay its welcome too much. This is one that is going to go down better with those who love no to zero budget flicks. Don’t expect major storytelling within the segments and probably have a few beers going in. The film used a projector jam burn effect too often across the early segments. Score for the vampire segment only. 3.5 out of 10.
