Short Film: The Final Voyage of the Good Ship Demeter

The scenes within Dracula from the Demeter have oft been considered a source for standalone terror. They have been novelised, both in prose and graphic form, they were the source for a feature length episode of the 2020 version of Dracula and there has been an often-suggested feature production (which I hope for but will believe when I see).

Steve Bishop as the Captain

This is that story but as a short film and done in monologue style directed by Bryan Enk and featuring Steve Bishop as the Captain, this 7-minute film was released in 2012 and avoids the trappings and pitfalls of budget by working in said monologue style. So, we see the captain in portrait against black as he narrates and sound effects generate the feeling of a ship at sea and in storm. The dialogue is lifted directly from Stoker, though choices have been made as to which part of the Demeter logs they use – this isn’t the whole chapter recited verbatim. Some parts are shortened, crew names dropped and the odd word added, probably for recited flow. None of the changes detract. Beyond that there isn’t much more to say. The imdb page is here.
