Honourable Mention: Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

This was the second Goosebumps movie, released in 2018 and directed by Ari Sandel – a film that knew what demographic it was aiming for and did what one might expect from a Goosebumps property.

The basic story is that friends Sam (Caleel Harris) and Sonny (Jeremy Ray Taylor) start a junk clearing business and are contacted to empty a spooky old house that once belonged to R L Stein (Jack Black). Stumbling over a secret panel in the fireplace they find a chest containing a locked book. They open it and a dummy, Slappy (Mick Wingert), appears. They read out words from a card in its pocket and it comes to life.

Slappy is part of Stein’s unfinished story Haunted Halloween and the book comes to life through the dummy who wants a family and so brings Halloween to life. So why the mention?

growing a vampire from a mask
When I say brings Halloween to life, I literally mean it. Slappy uses his magic to animate the Halloween decorations – starting at a store. Flocks of rubber bats take flight – legitimately crap bats – and then the masks grow bodies. Amongst these is a vampire (Joseph N. Hardin), who kind of just lurks in the background and doesn’t have much more than a fleeting visitation in the movie. But, he is there and therefore deserves a mention.

man-bat
I should also mention a man-bat type vampire/vampire bat hanging by a door, which snarls and snaps at trick or treaters. That is the sum total of the vampirism and, of course, we get witches, a werewolf, at least one zombie and ghosts. However, a fleeting visitation is all it takes to get a mention here.
