The Greatest Ever Scary Movies

Harker and Dracula The UK Channel 5 last night transmitted another scary film list – this time a viewer voted top 40 scary films.

There was only one vampire entry and I found the choice odd as Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), at number 33, isn’t my idea of the scariest vampire movie made.

That's a very odd list. I don't normally think of Taxi Driver or A Clockwork Orange as "scary movies." Maybe disturbing, but not really scary.

I'm curious, what would you consider the scariest vampire movie of all time? I wouldn't pick Bram Stoker's Dracula, either, but I'm not sure what I would choose.

I agree that it is an odd list.

Your question is fair but difficult to answer as I don't tend to find vampires that scary (strangely).

Nosferatu would be an obvious pick as, for its time, it was a fantastic piece of scary cinema. Then I guess it would be the atmosphere of the movie, so Black Sunday would have to be mentioned, the psychoticness or animalism of the vampires, perhaps Near Dark. Though still in production, 30 days of night has potential for scares.

All in all, however, the one that really produced a sense of fear for me - albeit when I first saw it I was a lot younger - was Salem's Lot (1979).

Yeah, the scene where the vampire boys tap at the window is very creepy.

I guess I don't find vampire films, in general, that scary, either. Of course, I've not seen Ankle Biters, yet.

Ankle biters is trully terrifying, foe all the wrong reasons lol.

Can't disagree with your comments re Nosferatu, Zombiepunk.

Perhaps they should re-do the list with least scary - I'd vote for the vampire puppy rising from the grave in Zoltan!
