From director Olivia Loccisano, this 8-minute 2022 short is perhaps not for the squeamish. It tracks Mia (Lauryn Sa) on a day she wakes to find that she has started her first period.
A tale of womanhood and transformation it perhaps also touches on Othering with its vampiric overtones and does so with a feminist lens.
What Loccisano plays with is the trope of blood consumption – first seen when Mia is taking a shower and cuts herself shaving, she tastes and then devours the blood. This also impacts her when sat at the lake with boyfriend Josiah (Tristan Grajales), they kiss, perhaps a little awkwardly but her hand snakes round his neck and then in her fantasies she bites into his shoulder. This mashes the trope with blossoming womanhood.
