I really don't get why they can't just shoot in Juneau, Alaska. Or even Vancouver. Supposedly the place they are shooting in New Zealand is close to the antarctic. So how is that any less dangerous to the crew? Still, that's only a minor complaint.
Peter Jackson, I believe, said he shot the Lord of the Rings films in New Zealand because it is so much cheaper there that it made the budget triple in value. Perhaps that is the real reason, though why they wouldn't admit it is a mystery.
There is also a very established film industry in New Zealand that perhaps Alaska cannot match.

The danger aspect does seem a little off though
