This one is a weak film and as a piece of cinema suffers but I still can watch it with pleasure.

Have you noticed how look-alike the bad guy is to Christopher Lee? The voice they dubbed him with sounds similar too lol.

Ah.. We don't need lessons in "art cinema" in here. We love vampires. And most vampire lovers love Hammer. It has too many flaws to mention, especially overt silliness and acting (and this comes from a person, who thinks soap star Farah Fath is perfectly capable actress)but I think it has wonderful 1970s England goes Gothic atmosphere. Fun-tastic movie. A good film? Yes, because it´s entertainment and succeeds.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23449634.post-81035153102046138332008-04-06T22:53:00.000-07:002008-04-06T22:53:00.000-07:00olliemugwomp, one of the great moments in film is ...olliemugwomp, one of the great moments in film is when a character from a book or story is resembled by someone on screen - it is a purely personal thing as our inner image is our own but it is great none-the-less.

The film has some stand out individual moments but it is the lack of cohesion between them that spoils this - especially compared to the other two films.

Cheers for your thoughtsTaliesin_ttlghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10105263634442191232noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23449634.post-113936746077821212008-04-06T16:26:00.000-07:002008-04-06T16:26:00.000-07:00Despite it's faults (which are many); I adore the ...Despite it's faults (which are many); I adore the blood-sacrifice scene - the music and atmosphere's brilliant when Mircalla/Carmilla rises.

The stand-out for me acting wise was Barbara Jefford OBE as the Countess; in retrospect to LeFanu's Carmilla (which is a classic), she resembles the "handsome, theatrical, black-velvet clad" Countess more than Dawn Addams in the previous film.OllieMugwumphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05121652679353522702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23449634.post-1156701147682959072006-08-27T10:52:00.000-07:002006-08-27T10:52:00.000-07:00Edna, I can certainly agree that Countess Dracula ...Edna, I can certainly agree that Countess Dracula is a horrible, boring mess...

As for Interview I have a few quibbles with it and, in the grand scheme of cinema perhaps it would have scored less than I gave it but as a vampire piece, which is how I'm scoring, I couldn't rationale less than top marks. I can't actually remember if I've seen Kronos or any of the Hammer TV series but I did see Countess Dracula again on the box a few months ago and didn't think it was that bad for a Hammer. Now, Dracula A.D. 1972 and Satanic Rites of Dracula - THEY'RE bad!
As for inappropriate pop songs, surely Interview With The Vampire (which I see you've given 10 out of 10) should lose minimum 2 points for the last few minutes of dumbdown hell they put the audience through. Ugh!
I'll get me cape.Edna Sweetlovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14163660126770872640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23449634.post-1156583644856766372006-08-26T02:14:00.000-07:002006-08-26T02:14:00.000-07:00As a youngster I watched, quite regularly, the Ham...As a youngster I watched, quite regularly, the Hammer House of Horror - if the title is correct I am running from memory - the TC series.

I still have strong memories of Charlie and Rude Awakenings, yet I have not seen them since, they are firm fixtures in my mind.

At around the same time I saw the Wicker Man. No real memories stayed with me, I did not carry it with me, until I rewatched it as an adult.

Wicker Man is an excellent film, better than many British horrors, and yet it never had the same impact that the Hammer material had on me. Quite obviously I have carried that impact with me, we are all products of nurture as well as nature.

Each person takes something different from a film. I know many friends who love Hammer, who love the unique atmosphere (and yes they had an atmosphere, all of their own) that Hammer injected into their movies.

Hammer dominated the vampire genre until their films began to crumble in the 1970's. Even so, in the 70's, they still made films such as Captain Kronos - an excellent movie in my opinion. It seems that you have a low opinion of David Pirie, but he would seem to agree. The chapter of his book "The Vampire Cinema" entitles "The British Vampire" is almost entirely dedicated to Hammer.

They also made some dreadful films, Countess Dracula being a prime example of this.

Lust for a Vampire is most commonly criticised because of the "Strange Love" moment. I remarked that maybe I should have knocked a mark from the final score because of this, but refuse to score a film down because of one pop song inappropriately put in the middle of the film.

Incidentally, I have just linked over to the imdb page for this movie to see what score the film recieved over there, and the average viewer score for this movie is 5.5 out of 10 from some 295 votes. I clearly rate this below average. You clearly dislike the film aplenty. Clearly, however, there are people who rate this film above average in the grand scheme of cinema.Taliesin_ttlghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10105263634442191232noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23449634.post-1156556293863354812006-08-25T18:38:00.000-07:002006-08-25T18:38:00.000-07:00You know what? "Get real", babycakes. Some are fun watches but not even David Pirie would accuse them of being Good Films. I saw Fisher's Dracula again the other day - OK, it's lots of fun, evidently one of the best Hammers and quite original in places but, in the scheme of things, it's just an above-average B time-filler. (Fisher was clearly no master - have you seen the abominable Island of Terror?) Have you actually ever been scar(r)ed by a Hammer? Has a Hammer ever had an atmosphere to match low-budget gems like Witchfinder General, The Wicker Man or even The Honeymoon Killers? HELL, NO!!Edna Sweetlovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14163660126770872640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23449634.post-1150138493007686082006-06-12T11:54:00.000-07:002006-06-12T11:54:00.000-07:00Sorry to disagree with you Edna, as I think that -...Sorry to disagree with you Edna, as I think that - whilst this film is weak - Hammers are, generically, excellent; there is a feel to Hammer that just cannot be replicated. Ralph Bates in this, in my opinion, was excellent, protraying just the sort of character that was called for.

That said, I appreciate your comment. Debate is always healthy.Taliesin_ttlghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10105263634442191232noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23449634.post-1150132447272191672006-06-12T10:14:00.000-07:002006-06-12T10:14:00.000-07:00Appalling film (like most Hammers).
